Considered by some to be one of the works of standard repertoire for the Wind Ensemble. Recorded by Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble of Mercury 432754-2 CD. In four movements: Andante—Allegro non-troppo, Vivace, Lento and Allegro molto. Total playing time: 14:30. Scored (as with the Stravinsky work for 23 winds) for 3 Flutes, 3 Oboes, 3, B flat Clarinets, 3 Bassoons, 4 Horns, 3 Trumpets in B flat, 3 Trombones, and 1 Tuba. The 2nd and 3rd flutes alternate with Piccolo, 3rd Oboe alternates with English Horn, 3rd Clarinet alternates with Bass Clarinet and 3rd Bassoon alternate with Contra-Bassoon. This difficult work was composed in 1957 and has been recorded by many wind ensembles around the world.
The 2025 edition parts have been fully remastered, digitally scanned, and meticulously restored. Now returned to their original full-size Arch A format (9×12), these beautifully refreshed parts offer improved clarity, readability, and page layout—helping musicians rehearse efficiently and deliver a confident, polished performance of this classic work for wind ensemble.
